George Carey was Archbishop of Canterbury 1991–2002 and is now a life peer. He supports the many apartheid checkpoints that Israel illegally operates in East Jerusalem and the West Bank as “sadly needed”.
Ignoring the fact that Israel has oppressed Palestinians ever since it was founded in 1948, Carey claims he is saddened by the portrayal of “Israel as oppressors of victims” – i.e. the truth. Jesus said “The truth will set you free” (Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 32). Carey, under whose primacy Church of England membership continued to plummet, kindly corrects our Lord and Saviour.
I am not aware of Carey uttering a single word in support of Palestinians whom Israel has ethnically cleansed, whose land and water Israel has stolen, whose homes it has demolished and whose trees it has burnt. But my source is a British Zionist news website quoting an Israeli newspaper. If Carey does in fact support these victims of injustice, he is welcome to let me know.
Carey was commenting on an exhibition at Hinde Street Methodist Church in Marylebone called “You Cannot Pass Today”, because it has recreated an illegal Israeli checkpoint for the World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel. Hinde Street stressed that “There is no criticism of the Jewish community or faith” in its exhibition. But this truth is inconvenient to any Zionist wanting to denounce the truth.
It was predictable that the Zionist Federation, Board of Deputies of British Jews and pro-Israeli newspapers have attacked the exhibition as “divisive”. But a former Anglican Primate making a fool of himself may be the nadir of this controversy thus far.
The one benefit of Carey’s gaffe is that it augments the already abundant evidence that “Zionist” and “Jew” are not synonyms and never can be. Carey is clearly a Zionist, a Christian (however ignorant and misguided) and not a Jew. Many Jews are not Zionists; many Zionists are not Jews.
Many Zionists, of any religion or none, conflate Jewish and Zionist identities and then smear opposition to Zionism as “anti-Semitic”. Their aim is to discredit and gag honest debate.
As part of this, bizarre as it seems, one of Zionism’s aims is to demonise its own name. And too many Gentiles are willing to make themselves “useful idiots” to support that aim.
